Do not be proud of your fine feathers!

puritan2This morning I stumbled upon an excellent resource called Puritan Library.  I have limited exposure to the Puritans writings so I was exciting to know that I can get a taste without having to go out and purchase any of their works right now.  I’m not a huge fan of reading digital material, especially for long stretches, but I like the idea that I can expose myself to it and then purchase some of it for further reading and study.  The following is a excerpt from a collection of sermons on  the Westminster Catechism by puritan writer Thomas Watson.

The following exerpt spoke to me deeply this morning–

Quoted from:

Body of Practical Divinity

By Thomas Watson

Do not be proud of your fine feathers!

Behold here a sacred riddle or paradox–“God was manifest
in the flesh.”
 That man should be made in God’s image, was
a wonder–but that God should be made in man’s image, is
a greater wonder!

That the Ancient of Days–should be born;
that He who thunders in the heavens–should cry in the cradle;
that He who rules the stars–should suck the breast;
that Christ should be made of a woman–and of that
    woman which He Himself made;
that the mother should be younger than the child she bore;
this is the most astonishing miracle! “God was manifest in
the flesh”
 is a mystery we shall never fully understand until
we come to heaven, when our light shall be clear, as well as
our love perfect.

“He humbled Himself and became obedient to
 death–even death on a cross!” Philippians 2:8

“God made Him who had no sin–to be sin for us!”
 2 Corinthians 5:21

This was the lowest degree of Christ’s humiliation.
That Christ, who would not endure sin in the angels
should endure to have sin imputed to Himself–is the
most amazing humility that ever was!

Christian! Learn to be humble! Do you see Christ humbling
Himself–and are you proud? It is the humble saint, who is
Christ’s picture! Christians, do not be proud of your fine
feathers!
 Have you an estate? Do not be proud. The earth
you tread on is richer than you! It has mines of gold and
silver in its depths. Have you beauty? Do not be proud. It
is but water mingled with dirt! Have you skill and abilities
Be humble. Lucifer has more knowledge than you! Have you
grace
? Be humble. It is not of your own making–it was
given to you by God. You have more sin than grace; more
spots
than beauty. Oh look on Christ–this rare pattern of
humility–and be humbled! It is a sad sight, to see God
humbling Himself–and man exalting himself; to see a
humble Savior
–and a proud sinner! God hates the very
semblance of pride! “I hate pride and arrogance!”
    Proverbs 8:13

“If God,” says Augustine, “did not spare the angels
when they grew proud; will He spare you–who are
but dust and sin?”

—————————————

Christmas time is coming!  Let’s remember the greatest miracle…God being manifested in the flesh!

Ponder the humility of Christ (Phil 2:1-11) and consider what that means for his disciples.

Weekly Scripture Passage 27 Oct 08

Ephesians 1:7-14

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known [3] to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, 12 so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee [4] of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, [5] to the praise of his glory.

258 Theological Questions Answered

Here is an excellent resource from www.bible.org. Bible.org has produced a translation called The NET Bible (and here) which uniquely includes the translator notes. They have also developed a web-based bible study tool called The NeXt Bible Learning Environment …check it out.

In addition, the following link is to 258 Theology Questions Answered from bible.org’s Theology Program for lay people. Each subject is usually a pithy video about the subject matter presented in a classroom setting. It only cost you $500…no, just kidding… it’s free! There are questions that give answers to the essentials to Christianity and also to some that are a little more controversial but makes note of that next to the link.

Weekly Scripture Passage 19 Oct 08

Ephesians 1:1-6

1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God,

To the saints who are in Ephesus, and are faithful [1] in Christ Jesus:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Spiritual Blessings in Christ

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us [2] for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. [ESV]

Scripture Memory Challenge

I have decided to get serious about memorizing scripture.  I have never really developed the discipline.  The other day I came across the following blog post on the ESV.org blog while checking out their new study bible (which is incredible if you have seen it yet -go here).   I would like to share the blog with you and some other helpful resources.

Here is the initial blog post that I read:

Listen to this excellent interview of Dr. Andy Davis:

He also preached on this subject at a recent Founders Conference which is very helpful:

Watch the following for inspiration:

Grudem’s Systematic Theology Class

Dr. Wayne Grudem has taught through his  Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine in Scottsdale Bible Church’s Christian Essentials Class.   They have been kind enough to place them online for our edification.  Dr. Grudem’s Systematic Theology is excellent and provides wonderful application for your walk with the Lord.  Is it enough to have all of our theological ducks-in-a-row, a head full of knowledge without pressing our hearts toward Christ himself?  It shouldn’t be all academia but the truths that are developed and understood from His word should translate into growth in obedience and love for Him.

Monergism has neatly organized them here but you can only listen to them online.

If you want to download them and place them on a CD or MP3 player click here.

Scripture Passage of the Week

Gal 5:16-25

Walk by the Spirit

16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, [1] drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.  (ESV)

Well, here it goes…

I think my first choice for this blogs name was ‘In Over My Head’, but it was taken.  And that’s how I feel about producing my own blog.  I’ve lurked and read a number of them for years and the thought crossed my mind a few times, but in the end I would simply chicken out.  Not only did I have no real experience with a blog but I have no idea if I can say or bring anything to the table that is interesting to anyone.  This week I was thinking about the prospect of doing this blog thing and thought, ’I have lots of things that are interesting to me so I guess I should just share them and not worry if anyone pays attention or not.’  So here it goes…

The ultimate goal of this blog is to glorify my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and share the truth of His gospel to anyone who has ears to hear.

Secondarily, we all know about some excellent resources that are out there on the web.  We can point each other to them to mutually edify as brother and sisters in Christ.  This can be anything that is uplifting in spirit, educational, relevant to our spiritual growth, or just good ol’ clean fun, etc.  So I foresee this blog growing in contributors to accomplish the intent of the blog.  Now, I’m almost positive that this blog will morph overtime to accommidate my ever changing interests since I seem to have a focus problem.  Anyway, welcome and hope that you can overlook my often times inability to communicate clearly and affectively.  Please, if you come to the opinion that I have a blind spot, not recognizing that I shouldn’t be in anyway involved with the creation of a blog, once again, please let me know so I can healed of my blindness.

Michael
